Enabling Sitecore IP Geolocation in 8.1 +

Sitecore has made it easy to enable IP geolocation lookup. In the past you would have to work directly with Maxmind for lookup and install their own packages. Now it really is as easy as clicking a button. Here is some documentation – "Setting up Sitecore IP Geolocation".

However I did want to point out a few things that will help make this process go smoother.

Tip 1 – When going through the process, use Internet Explorer. The App Center requires Silverlight and just seems to install / function best when working with Internet Explorer.

Tip 2 – The subscription is bound to your license. This is a gotcha if you are a partner that has their own developer licenses and work with a client. So if you were planning on developing out GeoIP features on your developer license and then moving the code to the client license, this is going to be an issue.

Tip 3 – Going through this process on your personal SDN account will more than likely get an error message. There is no permission to do what you are trying to accomplish. You will need to go through this process with an account that has the ability to purchase for your organization.

Outside of these gotchas, the process is pretty straight forward. Enable the service, select the level of lookup, and configure. If you are running into any issues, contact Sitecore Support to help you.
